Comment on medical malpractice reform

Joanne Doroshow, of the Center for Justice and Democracy, has published a short article on medical malpractice in which she laments the fact that the new U.S. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) has announced once again that he'll be convening hearings soon to examine, among other things, "the role medical malpractice reform can play in reducing health care costs." As she suggests, this will continue to repeat all the already thoroughly discredited notion that taking away injured patients' legal rights will help reduce health care costs and will result in better and more efficient health services. Too bad there is no empirical support for the conclusion.
